We need to remember that while BP initially released only grainy video of the leak, internally BP had high-resolution video of the same oil flow which they did not release to others until several weeks later.

So we can't blame BP's 1,000 barrel per day estimate of a more than 28,000 barrel per day leak on the high-resolution video they were seeing internally. The lo-res video may provide an excuse for outsiders.

It seems likely this inconsistency is what caused BP to withhold their high-resolution video until they faced Congressional subpoenas.

Strikes me that the only variables you need to know to get an accurate measurement of oil flow are;

%oil vs %other hydrocarbon
velocity of flow (obtained through an optical flow meter)
diameter of pipe (known).

Am I missing something?
