I agree it's more difficult not being in person, but underestimating the flow by a factor of more than 28 fold is somewhat difficult to explain.

I believe BP's underestimate was made to fit the maximum flow they needed to obtain permission to apply Corexit at the wellhead. A decision they may come to regret.

The first rule of managing a disaster is, always communicate the actual facts as you know them.

Any attempt to cover-up or mislead always costs your company's reputation and pocketbook far more in the end. At least that's the training we always received.
