It seems what happened is we built this military/corporate complex to win WWII, the war AGAINST Fascism, and after that, the corporations decided, "Hmmm. That fascism seems to be in our interest..." The Cold War sealed the deal. American democratic experiment basically OVER, in practice. The corporations, due to advances in sales techniques and scientific opinion manipulation, coupled with near total media control, could make Americans vote however they desired. Besides, it didn't really matter if Tweedledum or Tweedledee won, all that was determined was which conglomerates had the government.
