I'm a mechanical tool guy, not a geologist or a petroleum engineer so this is sort of out of my area. It seems to me that they ought to be able to calculate the flow rate by using a couple of pitot tubes and by knowledge of the flow area.

There are two big caveats to that: The flow looks like it is very turbulent and the flow is also multiphase, both oil and gas. Both of those factors severely limit the accuracy of the calculation.
