I was in Alaska when the Exxon Valdez hit the reef. Within two weeks of the accident, an Exxon rep was in our processing plant on Kodiak Island offering each worker a check for ~$2,500 - no questions asked. We just had to sign a waiver. Everyone, to the best of my memory, did.

About a year and a half later, I received another ~$6,000. All claims went through a (supposedly) non-biased intermediary in Seattle.

The only hoops I ever jumped through were to sign a couple forms and make a couple calls. Possibly the easiest cash I ever made.

FWIW, I still get periodic mail from that claims office. More than 20 years on and the process keeps a platoon of administrators employed.
