It's funny to see you try to defend the notion that failsafe is a waste of time since I am the ex-officio industry guy saying that failsafe or something close to it is possible. The industry just hadn't counted on risk taking to the degree that BP did on deepwater horizon. It not unlike the subprime risks that lenders and investors took on. Us engineers can probably design something to satisfy the required 101th scenarios and you can count on someone eventually coming up the the 102nd to shave a 1-2% cost.

BTW - acoustic control is what the Norwegians have that our industry has lobbied against during the Dubya years. Dubya didn't have very bright people running the show but hey, his agenda was aligned with the industry. Obama otoh, has very bright people running the show, unfortunately their agenda is not the industry agenda. Acoustic controls would have stopped this early on imo. Too bad my industry buddies were so successful with Dubya. BP is toast.
