If that were true it wouldn't be a reason to NOT drill in deepwater.

BTW the first deepwater production in the Gulf of Mexico begain in 1979 in Shell's Cognac field.

There h/b thousands of wells drilled in the GOM in water over 1500 feet.

See Figure 15 below:

From 1992 through 2008, 466 wells were drilled in the GOM at depths of 5000 feet or greater.

During that period, 2,460 wells were drilled in the GOM at depths from 1500 - 4999 feet.
