The stone age ended as better technology replaced it and even though a few stones remain nobody is fretting about them, except maybe Siddhartha but ... no I take that back he would be fine with new stuff. The age of petroleum will pass the same way. You're presumption, a running out of petroleum, which would be a catastrophic end to the modern age as we know it, sounds magnificent but that is not reality. I'm all for smart usage. There is a lot of oil and there are huge and successful efforts to bring new and efficient sources of energy into production. Not all practical but day by day we are getting closer to affordability. I'm also for giving ourselves as much time as possible. When we enter an age where fossil fuel is expensive and dirty compared to the alternatives which have become plentiful, no one is going to be fretting that there are fewer lakes of oil or coal miles underground than there used to be. THAT's a stupid argument. There are already people like Broken Clock who says he has accomplished clean, efficient, cheap, and plentiful. It will happen world wide but we aren't there yet. To bring society to that age of affordable clean and plentiful energy that is not fossil fuel we need to transition by making use of the oil that is available. Now that we've gotten past your whale dodge, maybe you can respond like an intelligent adult to this... " It's not only worth it, it is all we've got to go on for now.
