NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Global sales of semiconductors climbed to $11.8 billion in September, the highest total in 19 months and an increase of 14.7 percent over the same period a year ago. The Semiconductor Industry Association's latest report, issued Thursday, said the latest data point to continued strong sales for the remainder of 1997. Sales grew in three of the world's four major markets. September also marked the fifth consecutive month in which sales surpassed 1996 levels. "The September results are in line with the 1997-2000 worldwide forecast we released last week which calls for industry growth of 5.5 percent in 1997 and 16.8 percent in 1998," said George Scalise, the association's president. The Asia-Pacific region showed the greatest improvement over last year, with sales increasing 22.4 percent to $2.6 billion. Other strong gainers were North and South America, up 20.1 percent to $3.9; and Europe which reported an increase of 15.7 percent to $2.3 billion. Japan came in last, reporting an 1.3 percent increase over last year with sales of $2.8 billion. September sales increased $190 million, or 1.6 percent, from August's sales of $10.61 billion. Europe led the gainers with a 4.4 percent increase, followed closely by Asia-Pacific, where sales increased 3.9 percent. Sales increased only 1.9 percent in the Americas, and Japan reported the only decrease, with a 2.9 percent dip in sales. The Americas once again led all markets in sales, with chip purchases totaling $3.93 billion, or 33 percent of global sales. Despite its sales decline, Japan still came in No.2 in September.
