BP officially stated that their well blow-out was releasing only 1,000 barrel of oil per day.

It was the U.S. Coast Guard who said the spill was likely at least five times larger, which is where the 5,000 barrel per day figure came from.

It now appears the oil release was initially around 45,000 barrels per day and has now expanded to something larger than 50,000 barrels per day.

BP's oil flow estimate was only off by 4,500%.
