Alabama's coastal home sales plummet

Last month, the dollar value of homes sold in the Baldwin County area totaled $70.6 million, a 17 percent drop from April and an 11 percent drop from May 2009, according to Tom Brander, publisher of the Rudulph/Brander Monthly Birmingham Area Real Estate Report.

Share Brander, who also compiles a monthly coastal home sales report based on the Baldwin County Multiple Listing Service area, said the drop from April to May was the first time that's happened in data that goes back to 2002.

May's dollar value total also was the lowest May sales level on record, he added, calling the oil spill's impact a "crisis of unprecedented proportion."

"The impact and fear from this disaster has already made itself felt in this month's report," he wrote in his blog.
