Why should it be troubling? He's an Islamist. It's been people like Friedman that have enabled Erdogan by insisting that this guy was a "moderate." Whistling past the graveyard didn't change reality, Tom. You've carried water for the fox in the henhouse of your beloved Turkey.

Erdogan has been persueing these Islamist policies for years. His statement about Muslims not committing genocide was a couple of years ago. What's happening now is that the DC blinders, which until now kept pretending nothing had changed in Turkey, are coming off. They know they will only look like fools if they keep pretending. If Friedman were still a reporter and not a courtier he would have written this column a year or two ago.
