It is unclear to what extent swifter or more decisive action by the government would have protected the Gulf's fragile coastline. The White House's defenders say the spill would have overwhelmed any defense, no matter how well coordinated.

Serious omission here. And what about Dutch skimmers, etc., that were refused? And the Jones Act as merely a feather-bedding piece of legislation that protects the Unions from foreign competition. And who is motivated to protect unions first, the nation's waters, second?

The authors are silent on these issues.

And the lesson(s) here? Who shall make homeowners whole for the FRE FNM HUD housing crisis?

Who claims responsibility for that, or for decades of greater errors by Detroit? And who should pay for the egregious mismanagement of the Ill, PA, and California pension funds?

Us? Instead, how about the citizens of respective states..and their bureaucrats?
