"As president I would have put General Honore in charge of the operation during week one"

That's why you aren't president.

No, I take that back. This is why you aren't president.
"BP should have much more oversight at the well site - like the former president of Shell Oil (Hoffmeister) "

"get expert advice on whether using large quantities of any dispersant would be appropriate and safe for the entire water column"

Like a 50 person panel?
epa.gov
Forget my first 2; this why you aren't president.
I better quit while you are ahead.

Why would you want the American taxpayer foot the cost? Right now, it is in BP's interest to contain losses and damages. It they want to take the profits when everything is working normal, then they have to also bear the consequences when things go bad.

Besides, where is all the money going to come from. They messed up and hence they need to fix it. The art is in not doing the job but instead in getting it done.

It is about time we begin to assert ourselves and use the power of our markets to summon the top honchos, whether they are from Toyota or BP. Does not matter.

Fine.......you should run for president in 2012 and then you can do it your way.

As president I would have put General Honore in charge of the operation during week one...and BP should have much more oversight at the well site - like the former president of Shell Oil (Hoffmeister) could be Obama's special advisor for leveraging the best cleanup assets and strategies from around the world...Also we should have had Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute involved from the first week (to get the best input on what's really happening on the ocean floor and get expert advice on whether using large quantities of any dispersant would be appropriate and safe for the entire water column)...General Honore could set up a world class command and control structure that would be much more responsive and efficient than what we see from the current joint BP / U.S. Coast Guard operation...Every Gulf state still has major complaints about getting the assets and manpower they need to address the growing threat from this historic oil spill...BP should have NO input on the cleanup and shoreline operations...Just send ALL the bills to BP...and all the branches of the military and all the private contractors and volunteers would work for Honore's operation, not for BP...operating principles would be speed, efficiency, transparency, and safety...What's going on in the Gulf is so much more important than any war games over in Iraq or Afghanistan -- let's use our troops and military assets where they really can have a positive impact.
