Actually BP's management seems very ineffective.

They have definitely bungled the PR end of it. Yesterday's reference to "Small People" when what he meant was "The Little Guy" is a perfect example. Of course, the media ran with it, knowing full well what the guy meant, and it certainly inflamed the situation, which is what the media wants.

I'm not sure they have been TECHNICALLY ineffective. I don't see anyone who understands the matter stepping up to say, "Here's how we solve this problem today". But I do agree that better leadership on BP's parts could have potentially altered the perception in the minds of Americans.

The way this should have played out is that Obama should have, "On Day One", said, "BP are the experts at plugging the leak. They need to do that. But the American Government will protect its shoreline, at any cost, and BP will pay the bill and they should be on notice that any failure to pay will cause us to litigate them out of existence. That's all there is to say about it, now let's get to work".

But no. Obama had to try and make a political moment out of it. He wants to show he's tough. He wants to seize the crisis to shove more horrible legislation down our throats.

It's probably such poor leadership like this that got them into this mess to begin with.

Maybe. Maybe not. I think they deserve a fair hearing. There is no evidence to date they are any worse than any other oil company drilling out there, which suggests it is a regulatory failure.

"They are assuming they are the villain because Obama is telling them he will make them so."

It was THEIR well, moron! BP had over 600 safety violations in the same period that Exxon/Mobil had ONE. Get a clue.
