Good ideas Jon; I'm a big SPY fan as a hedge. There are two problems I have run into shorting SPY however,

1, market orders can be a killer on the open because even if S&P 500 opens at,say, 940, and drops quickly to 925, SPY will often open at 92.5 and not 940.

2, WHen it really gets hot sometimes you can't borrow the shares to sell short. It has happened to me on Etrade and I've seen others post it ocurred on Schwab.
