DUBAI—Iran said Monday that it had barred two inspectors from the United Nations' nuclear watchdog from entering the country, accusing them of providing false information to the agency and disclosing findings before allowing Iranian officials to review them.

The move heightens tensions between Iran and the international community over the country's nuclear program. It comes after the U.N. Security Council voted earlier this month to impose fresh sanctions to slow the program, and in the wake of announcements in Washington and Europe of harsher, unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

Almost immediately after the U.N. vote, some lawmakers in Tehran threatened to reduce cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Vienna-based watchdog has long sent inspectors to Tehran to try to corroborate Iran's claims that its nuclear program is peaceful. That raised worry that international efforts to ascertain Tehran's nuclear intentions might become even more difficult.
