Clearly, you are right about politicians. And I'm not against having a social safety net either, but I am against THEFT, which is what "taking from Peter to give to Paul" actually is...

Therefore, the safety net should be provided by the generosity and choice of the givers. This should start first within families and spread from there as people see real need.

If the government stopped transferring wealth and left it to private citizens to take care of the truly needy, it would soon eliminate most free-loading and fraud. When money is given away out of one's generosity, rather than at the threat of imprisonment, one soon catches on to deadbeats.

I think that churches or other philanthropic organizations could fill in quite well for those who have no family or friends to help them through tight spots or inability to work.
