You can attribute that to the free competition amongst restaurants, who try to get more customers by offering more "values" in the form of bigger portion. There restaurants mostly cater to middle to lower class segments of the population. You don't get that big portion in upscale restaurants since the quality - and not the quantity - of the food that is important.


That's in restaurants but I don't think all that weight is coming simply from eating at restaurants which serve large portions. To bulk up the way they do, people have to be doing some major eating at home. We know that people frequently overeat because of psychological problems. Americans are known for being heavier on average than peoples from other countries. Could it be we have more psychological hangups? It would be interesting to see a study on the subject.
