arun, i'd argue the financial elites don't want a strong american middle class. they need to cut america off at the knees or else we will never accept their "prescription" that includes their authoritarian control over our nation. they get more and more wealth and use it buy up our politicians. our politicians enshrine their corporate monopolies (that is what cap and trade is all about) and rescind our constitutional rights - the slaves can't have rights, you see. they can't do it all at once, but they can do it over time.
