Hopefully you aren't reading an opinion of terrific marketing skills into anything I said about Bill's World. On the contrary, Microsoft was simply the de facto operating system of a cheap, standard business appliance. Compatibility with existing DOS hardware and software launched Windows and NT is doing the same for its predecessor -- albeit at a much slower pace. It's the compatibility-plus-new-stuff angle all over again. The Future Microsoft's bloated, generally non-object-oriented software (throw in costly to extend and maintain) is catching up to them. Better still, there is an alternative called Java. Not just that language -- that's only a fraction of what Java represents -- but the so-called Application Interface which allows developers to write to a portable standard versus Windows NT only. Once the performance and device support issues have been ironed out, you will see a massive effort to write to this virtual platform. AFA performance, there is NOTHING fast about Microsoft's component architecture or Visual Basic development system that Java can't match, period. Benefits for SGI Truly massive. The importance of having access to the standard business applications, development tools, utilities, training materials, books, manuals, seminars and educational curricula cannot be underestimated. What customers will get is a wholly familiar framework within which they can access the considerable hardware and software resources offered by SGI. This is a no-compromise solution since you are providing a standard operating environment on an exceptional platform and not trying to shoe-horn it the other way.
