MS even made it part of OLE. It's called variants and supposed to be really handy since it can do autotranslation to target data types as well.

Well, we've left the language wars and now we're on to the typing wars.

Do we won't strong typing or weak typing? Well, the answer is obvious. We want strong typing except when we want weak typing. Variants resolve this indecision for us. While we want strong typing, take away the magic and listen to the complaints....

Actually, variant was intentionally left out of my point about data types because even with the variant you are stuck with assembly-language types in OLE slash ActiveX. The variant simple allows you to package up a variety of simple data types but you need to write a block of code just to access the data from any language other than C++. I am glad to see that others are aware of Microsoft's BIG LIE about language independence and object-orientation in COM technology.
