It's traditional to offer one's resignation in such an event.

I still stand by my belief that this was deliberate on McChrystal's part in order to force Obama into either accepting his resignation, or taking his strategy seriously and fully resourcing his requirements. No general wants to be hung out to dry and blamed for a failure that is due to lack of political resolve.

I believe that Petraeus shares McChrystal's strategy as well.

After all, Petraeus wrote the DOD manual on Counter-Insurgency..

I have a copy of it.
