You are correct on both counts. Additionally, since Brinker promotes himself as a "market-timer" and sells a newsletter named "Marketimer" based on his reputation as a market-timer while advertising model portfolio performance, what he did "a decade ago" is very important.

Additionally, Brinker uses Mark Hulbert's newsletter rankings that go back 25 years to advertise Marketimer.

And even more importantly, Brinker is still doing a radio program one day a week in which he often promotes his newsletter. But for some "strange" reason, Brinker never mentions his SEVERAL big and costly blunders on the air.

When one FAIRLY considers all these facts, one concludes that it is important to be informed about Brinker's successes and FAILURES through the bull and bear markets.
