Postal industry subsidized and incubated most of the transportation systems in US (and maybe in other countries too). Even though it is the poster boy of inefficiency, I am fond of the Post Office for it it paid back in reliability. Post Office was our only mean of communication back in the 80s in Nigeria. I remember fondly going to Kaduna Post Office to retrieve my mail from P.O. Box 3818. This was my routine coming back from bush: I would take The Economist, and BusinessWeek from P.O. Box 3818, go home. Prepare a cup of instant coffee and read them. nytimes.com
