First, there was a need for more labor, so a lot of immigrants came. This caused some culture clashes, but not a lot. Later, we got refugees and other stuff, some of them are really weird and weak because of torture etc. Their children didn't get a proper childhood, and some of the parents had strange opinions. The result was gangs, killings of daughters that had adapted to western lifestyle, and there was even a chase through several cities where some girl's cousins finally caught up with a couple and killed them because the girl's boyfriend wasn't good enough for the family. At the same time, the government has tried to help these newcomers as much as possible, and this spending of tax money and news stories about how they don't adapt, were a bad mix. The first party to fight this had a lot of extremists. Pia Kjærsgård was part of it, but quickly rose in the ranks, until she finally broke out, made her own (small) party and took most of the voters with her. The new party did a lot of things to keep the morons out of power, and suddenly she had a party that was not fit for government, but was ok for government support. Since the problem, that caused the need for these parties, is hard to describe, and because the existing parties are doing a good job, she uses populist methods to get votes. It seems to me that the party has a dual interface: Towards the voters, they are populists, and towards other parties in the parliament, they are a reliable cooperation partner with a sane economic policy. Much of the stuff that has been made as a result of having that party around, has been copied by other countries in Europe, with 5-15 years delay, because it works. Immigration has been reduced, immigrants now fight for acceptance but get rewarded for doing a good job etc. Note, that many of the tightenings have resulted in conditions that are still very liberal on a worldwide scale, and Denmark is still much more accepting towards other cultures than many other countries in Europe. I guess that's why some muslim extremists, which were too extreme (persona non grata) in Saudi-Arabia, Yemen and Egypt, have found refuge in Denmark. In this political case, she definitely misjudged a few things, but she will survive that easily. However, the current government is not standing good after the austerity measures, so it has become very uncertain what the next election will give - however, the opposition have communicated, that they will not revert the austerity measures. Unlike USA, European countries have to make cuts to repay every dime we spent too much.
