NOAA: oil plumes only within 6 miles of well:

Encouraging news

In other news Wednesday, federal scientists reported evidence that underwater oil does not seem to be traveling more than six miles from the gushing wellhead, countering earlier reports of miles-long oil plumes under the Gulf’s surface.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said researchers had found little evidence that underwater oil plumes were either far-reaching or imminently threatening to marine life.

In the report, which NOAA called the first peer-reviewed, analytical summary of underwater oil monitoring, the agency described a “cloud of diffuse oil” around the well, with hydrocarbon concentrations at about 1 to 2 parts per million — small enough to be below “immediate levels of concern.” More than six miles from the wellhead, scientists detected no oil underwater.

“The data confirm a cloud of diffuse oil that decreases in concentration the farther you get from the wellhead — not a river of oil,” said Steve Murawski, chief scientist for NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service. “Our scientists will continue monitoring and testing for subsurface oil and the impact it is having on the Gulf’s ecosystem.”
