The pilot was past the point of no return when the engine tore off. He easily had enough power to fly on the remaining two engines. When the port engine tore, it took a lot of hydraulic lines with it. Hence the port wing slats - and I think flaps - withdrew. The port wing then stalled and the plane fell due to port the lift and crashed due to lift imbalance or insufficient total lift. There was some speculation that the pilot might have saved the situation if he had gone to full power, put the nose down and flew at 100 feet over suburban Chicago tearing all of the roofs off. He had seconds to assess and react. I think that he might have even lost the stall warning signal so he was very short of information. YouTube has a computer simulation:
