The moratorium is a "face" and a base satisfying issue for them, I think. A compromise moratorium is possible:

Aim it only at deepwater exploration wells - 28 of the 33 rigs are drilling development wells (exploration wells are drilled into / through new formations they don't know too much about till they drill through them. After the first exploration well, they have the benefit of knowing firsthand what they're drilling through, what pressure to expect, and other things).

Aim it at only those deepwater wells with a single string design as Maconda did.

Those are some ideas.

I'm curious what Obama will do once the commission filled with anti-drilling ringers comes out and recommends stopping offshore drilling entirely. I've read about the folks put on this commission and can't imagine them NOT recommending this. But will Obama do what they say?
