We can already produce great amounts of electricity from wind powered turbines that does not get used for two reasons.

The turbines generate the electricity but it has to be sent through transmission lines to population centers for use and excess energy can not be stored.

Sometimes, when the wind is blowing we don't have a use for the energy. That could be because it is night time and the power grid simply does not have the demand. So we have the ability to turn them some of them off when there is low demand. We also have transformers on the transmission lines to limit the amount of electricity being sent, so that there are not overloads.

Transmission to population centers that could use the energy is a huge problem, which is why Pickens had to abandon his effort to produce the largest wind farm in the world. It is expensive and a giant effort would have to be made to create this new infrastructure to make wind power a true alternative. I hope we accomplish that someday.

If we could solve these two problems (power storage and transmision), wind power would be able to produce an abundance of electricity for us.
