Greenspan will do nothing here except say "I told you so". The
stock market is looking six months ahead so forget about Christmas.
Unfortunately this asset devaluation thing could turn into an
asset preservation thing. Even good stocks like CPQ can be caught
in a market downturn of 10 to 20%. Remain cautious. BWDIK.

Good investing all.

RE: <<<The gloom on this thread spells bottom>>>

Not likely IMO. Unlikely to see any relief from Greenspan, in view of today's tight labor report and rising interest rates overseas.

As to INTC, the chart looks awful. Minor resistance at 70 will give way easily. For those still looking for a place to go long, wait for 65-66 range. Nothing much that Andy can say today that will change this. Intel has, at least temporarily, lost control of the microprocessor market.

Charlie.

Gary and all. Re: ..good Q despite gloomsters.

The numbers will be very good, unfortunately the two guys below, the consumer and MSFT are going to be the main beneficiaries, the rest including Intel are still stuck in the middle.
I bet Andy Grove is going to preach about the high end today and nirvana for Intel's investor's out there. Unfortunately there will be several moats to cross and dragons to slay along the way.

Intel has missed the paradigm shift, and is desperately trying to back pedal. With their marketing and financial muscle, Intel will get there. There is also a short cut via COMPAQ and MSFT.

Compaq, which has attacked the low end of the consumer PC market with several models under $1,000, left unchanged prices on its two least expensive Presario models, which currently retail for $799 and $999 but cut prices on eight other models.

''(Compaq and IBM) are creating a two-tiered market, with a high-end and low-end and they're taking the middle right out,'' Schaub said.
