Look at the bright side. This has to have happened naturally in the past, an earthquake opening a path from an oil reserve into the ocean. Once we see the results of dumping millions of barrels of oil into the GOM we might connect the dots to understand the cause of some events in prior history.

It would be most interesting, hhowever unlikely, if this turned out to be a good thing for marine life down the road. There are often winners as well as losers with these types of things. Extinction of the dinosaurs allowed man to rise up.
