Humanists, not unlike religionists, accept the presence of conscience as naturally existing and existing in such a way that conscience is socially informed according to circumstance. The individual is panged by conscience in a different way than society responds to situations conscientiously. Society or any sub-group responds to situations with a social conscience according to current mores of the group, the modern term is ‘with political correctness.’ An individual responds to circumstance conscientiously according to the basic rule of caring for the well being of self and others in all situations. An individual is considered to be corrupted when the influence of group persuades the individual to disregard that basic rule according to some situation in which group pressure is present, where group pressure may be as slight as the need to belong or to obtain status in the group, or as coercive as to be considered torturous. We hold individuals to an accounting when we can determine they have ignored or caused harm to the well being of some 'other' in order to further the cause of a group.
