I was within a few feet of what I thought was a spotted owl when I took a hike up near Bellingham once. But just now having taken a look at the Barred owl and reading about it, this owl could have been a Barred owl. What ever it was, it was so neat to be that close. He didn't leave, but just sat there on a branch screeching for his mate which was another 50 or so yards up the trail. Of course I didn't have a camera. :(

Barred owls are more successful than spotted owls, so they do not have a constituency of environmentalists to protect them.

Spotted owls are ok, but you need to serve them with a touch of teriyaki sauce to make them really good.
