In humans, depression can be caused if their adult life is different than their childhood in some aspects. In some cases, a bad childhood can cause many problems later, simply because the brain was programmed for something bad.

I know people that grew up thinking in socialist ways, who have serious problems today, because reality doesn't match their brain wiring.
