Although the Governor is a democrat he will hopefully keep his constituency in mind while appointing a replacement. Coal should be on his mind.

Never totally agreed with Byrd's politics. But he did possess an encyclopedic sense of history that was truly amazing.

Read his series of addresses, delivered before the Senate from memory and a few notes, on the Roman Senate. It's a good read:
