"He added that George Osborne, his chancellor of the exchequer, also meant it when he said “we are all in this together.”"

The Brits learned their lesson. The attitude of "screw you Jack, I've got mine" was prominent in the decline of the British Empire. Our conservatives haven't. They still think they can have their cake and eat it too.

Its a mindset that encourages rancor. Its become so prevalent in this country that an article I read recently pointed out people are consciously moving to places where they feel more politically aligned.

Along those same lines.......a couple of weeks ago, I was at a party where people were talking about all kinds of things but no politics. I rarely talk about politics off this forum. In any case, a couple came in that I had never met before. There was something about the woman that felt funny to me.......she was good looking but aloof in a way that's not typical here. She talked very little to anyone and yet she knew people at the party. Later I was talking to a couple of people and she sat down at the table but didn't join the conversation. We were talking about cell phones and calling long distance......esp. overseas..........at which point, I said my German friends always call me because they can call much cheaper than I can. Suddenly, this woman who had not said more than three words to anyone turns to me and says: "Those Germans are lousy socialists......that's why their telephones are so cheap". I was so startled I didn't know what to say......rather that get into it with her I simply said: "That could be".

Later, I thought about it and it occurred to me that she's a winger living in the land of liberals. The truth is I don't meet many people like her in my daily life and I like it better that way. And apparently others feel the same way. How fukked up is that? And what does that say about this country?

CJ - just strarted "Darwin's Radio" - I read everything Bear wrote after I read "Blood Music", but as with so many authors, I moved on and didn't keep up with his later works.

I just read a Phillip K. Dick I'd never read, "The Man Who's Teeth Were Exactly Alike". I'd probably never read it because it isn't SF! Just a straight fiction novel. I didn't know he'd written any. The library has it filed as SF.

A guy you might like, fantasy, not SF, is Tim Powers.
