If it is real, that's all it takes. Usually. Sometimes the evil is too much for that. In his case, it was real. And I am not aware of any nefarious direct deed that was done by him that would make me change my mind. Even George Wallace repudiated his segregationist past. To such an extent that he was later elected governor with black votes.

If you knew your next door neighbor used to be Klansman, I bet you would be uncomfortable.

Yes, I would be. But if he clearly, openly and fully repudiated it, I wouldn't have a problem with him on that ground. But, yes, I would want to talk to him about it.
