It depends on how it is defined so no exact answer can be given. If one equates it with any relationship to environment then it began when life first developed. Some people go farther (without any real evidence) and speculate that consciousness is sort of like an undiscovered ether which flows through all matter--organic and inorganic. Again, unless any two or more people qualify the word with a precise and exact definition where their understanding exactly comports...it is reckless to attempt any reasonable discussion.

It is a question for science to grapple with as technology and information grows. Soon it will be understood much better and who knows what exciting and marvelous discoveries are to come? There are thousands of interesting articles on the topic:

But it is not a question for such as you and the Princess to even consider. If you cannot understand how rainbows had to have existed the same day the sun shone and the rain fell...then science is really out of your league. Talking donkeys and the demon model of disease is where you need to focus your considerable powers of comprehension...
