I had you in mind (and a few others) when I recommended the Ravitch book to Kate. You would find it fascinating because she goes back through the arguments for charters, accountability, etc., and then examines a host of experiments/studies to conclude it's all a mistake.

I think it's required reading for those of us who care about keeping public education public.

I'm increasingly impressed with what's happening in my own small corner of public education--the teaching and administrative skills, the dedication of the staff, the hard work involved. Very impressive stuff. And I have every reason to believe it's more typical than idiosyncratic. At least for the category of suburban schools.

Same with homeschooling... it all depends on the situation. Shows the strength of at least the "idea" of school systems and all that.
