FWIW, I'm in agreement with you on taxing the rich more heavily, esp. if it could be done in the form of a temporary surcharge. It's simply not true that well-to-do conservatives are stingy and heartless. Lots of these people came from modest circumstances, worked hard, got a few breaks, and are quite willing to share what they have. BUT they want to believe that their money will be well spent. And they will really step up to the plate when they are giving to something that is temporary and targeted.

For example, they will fund the establishment of a free clinic or a summer camp system for disadvantaged children or a school mentoring program. They like to see where their money goes. They don't want their tax increases going into general revenues and paying for bloated retirement benefits. It's just like charities. People want to give to those charities with the smallest overhead.

Public employee retirement benefits are going to become a big issue in this country I predict.

Does Christie have any justification for not putting the millionaire surcharge on?
