Pouring mud into the top six feet of a well provides only six feet of mud weight.

The only hope that could have worked was if they had been able to develop enough pressure from the partially closed BOP filled with junk. BP said they were 80% confident that would work? Get used to the idea that BP has a problem telling the truth.

Pumping in thousands of feet of mud weight from the bottom of the well is a different matter.
