To prevent the current economic depression Americans would have needed to reject Ronald Reagan and his credit bubble economics.

Stopping the credit bubble any time after those eight years would have quickly created a seriously bad economic decline, as George H. W. Bush discovered.

As the credit bubble grew steadily since 1980, the consequences for when it ended grew worse.
