It is the ones who have no basic understanding of learning that abuse it and simply use technology for pleasure instead of tools which can extend our understanding. The kids in my extended family are good scientists and philosophers at heart with solid classical educations and have the modern technology under control. They watch very little TV, ride their bikes to work, but have computers down pat, live simple lives are socially conscious and recycle-lol. I believe it is mankinds manifest destiny to evolve. How he does it, probably will determine whether he makes it or not to the next step, whatever that is? But there surely is a next step.
