mattie:

No hype has ever been so great as for ATM. However, ATM is no ISDN (it still does nothing). ATM will fight GE for LAN based applications ala Token Ring vs. Ethernet. Pick your religion. But the WAN is ATM.

Frame Relay grows, replacing Private Lines. ATM trunks FR, Replaces FR for high bandwith sites, and aggregates non data traffic (voice, video).

The future of ATM is assured and huge. The installed base is already there in the telco infrastructure. Companies that make the networkers look small are selling billions of $'s worth of equipment (Alcatel, Siemans, NEC, Fujitsu, etc.)

What of edge access? That's the YURI (and competitors) play. What will the networkers do? LU? Nortel? IMO it's Wild West time.

Alex.
