Well, reason takes people to a lot of different places when facts are disputed, premises are unexamined, or interpretations are colored with the ever-present prejudice common to all existence. In all the thousands of wars and millions of attacks and skirmishes and altercations, both sides fought for what they believed was right.

When the Apache attacked some ignorant settler on his sacred cemetery grounds and the settler blew his head off with a blunderbuss they were both acting in the most purest and unsullied conscience in honoring their creator. Of course, if they both had the same Creator (and conscience was part of the package) then one of them could have said: "Oh my God! I am so evil! Please have my goat (or my pony) or my blunderbuss (or my hatchet)--or something"…
