>>As one black friend of mine said, who owns a book store: "even I do not go to Mississippi."

There University's have a larger percentage of blacks than Georgia. I know the state population also has more blacks, and many areas have mostly black politicians, so I have to wonder what your friend is worried about.<<

Let me preface with the question you did not answer: If I have this all mixed up, why did not one southern state repeal segregation on their own for over 100 years; and so making the congress force them to do it in 1964?

My black friend owns a book store in Atlanta. I had recounted my experience in Biloxi. He was saying Mississippi was still too brutal toward blacks for him to feel comfortable going there even though he lived in the south and knew the south.

Doesn't matter how many blacks live in Mississippi or how many universities you have. Immaterial.

And Mississippi still ranks last in high school graduates and I can see why after I saw their anti intellectual attitude

I played $20/$40 holdem in Biloxi for two weeks. The character's I ran into were pretty ornery and so anti intellectual that a fellow playing next to me would not confide to me he was a lawyer except as he left the game. I could see he was the only one at the table who's lights were on.

I found more hard core racists there than anywhere I have ever been. I was glad to leave. All I talked about was fishing and hunting and still they could sense I had an education and disliked me for it, and messed with me.

And I was very careful to keep my liberal ideas hidden. I kept my mouth shut except to talk about hunting and fishing.

The idea of discussing anything substantive was out of the question. When I got on the plan out of there I was happy.
