William Jacobson: Democrats Approach Ramming Speed
Thursday, July 1, 2010

Four months left until the November election. Time is running out on the Obama agenda.

Not the time to ease up, but to push harder because soon it will be too late.

Democrats are approaching ramming speed trying desperately to complete the picture, having taken over the health care system by a hair.

Chris Dodd, the Senator from Aetna and Fannie Mae, has put together financial reforms which create new bureaucracies without addressing underlying structural issues, causing even Russ Feingold to object.

Harry Reid and Henry Waxman are maneuvering to get cap-and-trade passed, a job destroying measure while Democrats misleadingly excoriate Republicans over the failure to extend unemployment benefits.

Obama today raises the stakes, announcing a big immigration reform push, while refusing to strengthen border security.

We have seen this movie before:

The larger political message of this new proposal is that Mr. Obama and Democrats have no intention of compromising on an incremental reform, or of listening to Republican, or any other, ideas on health care. They want what they want, and they're going to play by Chicago Rules and try to dragoon it into law on a narrow partisan vote via Congressional rules that have never been used for such a major change in national policy. If you want to know why Democratic Washington is "ungovernable," this is it.

We know the ending:
