why drilling permits were being given to BP in the first place based on their safety track record?

Because their regulators were dominated by ideologues who only wanted to get the drill bits going, damn the consequences.

And a targeted financial reform would be much easier if conservatives had any actual interest in any regulation bill at all.

Clearly, they do not. They have made that absolutely clear on the record.

So you see the world blow up on multiple fronts and you see who wants to prevent that in the future and who doesn't, and still you constantly dismiss the incumbents and by default, allude to support for those who would nothing (which we know from their recent track record in power). It seems that all Boehner has to do is introduce some grains of reasonable doubt, and he has a shot at being Speaker.

That just doesn't add up in my book, but to each their own. The American electorate is never going to produce great results the way they process the issues and politicians before them.
