One of the major problems we face, in education, is that many of our Hispanic parents will not come to school, for any reason, because they fear the "government" in any form. We have tried to offer support for these parents. I'm part of a community outreach program at our school to the Spanish speaking community. We hold bilingual informational meetings, pizza parties, and give the kids extra credit for getting their parents to school, so we can get the parents registered on the school computers- and thus able to keep track of their kids' education. Being angry at immigrants creates all sorts of ripples in society that the angry folks may not think of. We have to educate all children, and if you are angry enough at immigrants that they hide, their children may run essentially open loop- because parents won't even show up for discipline issues, which is absolutely critical. Even worse, the kids may not get to school, thus leaving them open days to fill with gangs and crime. Anger at immigrants is unhelpful, and in a nation that wants the cheapest nannies and lawn care and produce, it's going to be hard to keep the hardworking Hispanics from coming in to work jobs that Americans won't do for low wages. And I'm not sure Americans are really ready for the sticker shock of paying a fair price for all the things which are, right now, kept cheap by low wages. Heck, I know people who bitch about what they pay their gardeners and maids- even though they are paying far less than minimum wage, and aren't paying any benefits. My mom always hired people for a fair wage- she always did the paperwork, and made sure she was paying in to social security for them. I always respected that. I suspect some of the big mouths screaming about immigrants actually hire them, or benefit enormously from their presence- and would be screaming even louder once their pocket book gets pinched by the absence of immigrants. I don't know what the "answer" is- but I am quite sure it isn't the draconian wet dreams that some of the wingers seem to have.
